UNAS PROF. MATEETE BEKUNDA

Bekunda Mateete is a Professor of Soil Sciences. He attained a BSc (Agriculture) from Makerere University, MSc (Soil and Plant Analysis) from Wageningen Agricultural University, of the Netherlands and a PhD (Forest Soils) from the Australian National University. Previously, Prof Bekunda worked with the Experimental Scientists,

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia; as a Research Fellow, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Seibersdof, Austria and as Regional Research Fellow, The African Highlands Initiative. He has several awards and recognitions to his name, including among others as Visiting Scientist, Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of Newcastle, UK and as World Professor, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Iowa State University. He has trained several students at various levels, successfully accomplished several research projects and served as Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, Makerere University. Prof. Bekunda has made significant contribution to soil science and in particular on understanding nutrient availability and fractionation on a gradient, enhancement and detection. He serves as editor of several journals including the prestigious African Crop Science Journal and he is an immediate past president of the African Crop Science Society. He joined the category of Agricultural Sciences of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences in 2009.

unasPROF. REMIGIOUS BUKENYA-ZIRABA

Prof. Bukenya-Ziraba, born in Masaka District, completed his secondary education at St. Henry's College Kitovu and joined Makerere University where he attained a BSc. degree and a Post graduate Diploma in Education. He attained an MSc. in Plant Taxonomy from the University of Ghana and and a PhD in Plant Taxonomy from Makerere University. Prof. Bukenya-Ziraba has since then championed and successfully completed characterisation and scoping of Solanum, an indiginous, highly nutritoius vegatable.

His outstanding works and contribution to science has attracted much interest in socio-economic importance of indigenous vegetables and enhanced their utilization in nutrition for human wellbeing. He has offered and served with passion and dedication in several academic endeavours addressing ethnobotany issues at Makerere University and abroad. He has won many research grants and awards. He is also a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, International Society of Ethnobiology and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Prof. Bukenya-Ziraba has trained and mentored many young scholars in the field of ethnobotany and merits recognition as an outstanding scholar. He joined the category of Biological Sciences of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences in 2009.

UNASPROF. ABDU B.K. KASOZI

Prof Kasozi completed his A. Level Certificate at Nyakasura School. He obtained a BA degree in History at Makerere University College of East Africa and MA and PhD degrees in History from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He gained a Makerere Postgraduate Diploma in Education and an Ontario Teacher's Certificate in Canada.

He is currently Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), which guides and regulates Ugandan tertiary education. Prof Kasozi has played a key role in institutionalization and implementation of quality assurance procedures in tertiary training institutions in Uganda. Prof Kasozi has researched and consulted widely in the areas of History and Islam, Social Violence, Conflict and Relocation as well as on School and Higher Education quality in Uganda. He joined the category of Humanities of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences in 2009.

UNASPROF. SAMUEL KYAMANYWA

Prof. Samuel Kyamanywa completed his A-level at Kabalega Senior Secondary school. In 1980, obtained a BSc. degree in Agriculture at Makerere University and PhD in 1988 at the same University under the African Regional Postgraduate Program in Insect Science co-ordinated by The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE).

He is a professor in the Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture at Makerere University, with 25 years expertise in Agricultural Entomology and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Prof. Kyamanywa has championed the application of mixed cropping in pest management. Recently, he won an IPM Impact Award in recognition of his contribution towards the implementation of IPM for small scale farmers in Uganda. Currently he is the Dean Faculty of Agriculture, Makerere University after a short stint as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor at Kyambogo University. He is the Chairman of the Agricultural Chemicals Technical Committee of the Uganda Agricultural Chemicals Board, Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, which is responsible for regulating pesticides use in Uganda. He joined the category of Agricultural Sciences of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences in 2009.

UNASPROF JOSEPH Y.T. MUGISHA

Professor Joseph Mugisha is a Professor of Biomathematics in the Department of Mathematics, Makerere University. He obtained a B. Sc (Education), an M. Sc in Biomathematics and PhD from Makerere University. His area of research interest is applied mathematics.

He has in particular worked on analysis of biological and biomedical processes, including formulation of Mathematical Models in the spread of diseases particularly HIV/AIDS, fish harvesting, and forestry, environmental and ecological processes. He has held a number of prestigious Post-Doctoral fellowship awards including in 2001, at Cornell University, Ithaca; in 2002 at the University of Bergen, Norway; and in 2008 at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. He joined the category of Physical Sciences of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences in 2009.

unasDR LOUIS MUKWAYA

Dr Mukwaya is a seasoned Medical Entomologist who has widely and deeply researched on mosquitoes. He went to school at St. Mary's College, Kisubi and thereafter to Makerere University College. He holds a B.Sc. degree of the University of London obtained at Makerere University College in Zoology, Botany and Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Medical Entomology. He was a Post-doctoral Fellow (1973-74) in the Department of Biology, University of Princeton U.S.A.

He has contribution immesrsely in understanding population dynamics, genetic characterisation of mosquitoes and use biological pathogens (e.g. Bacillus thuringiensis) and plant extracts (e.g. Phytolacca dodecandra) to kill mosquito larvae. He recognized by His Excellency the President of Uganda and awarded him grants to advance his research in Mosquito/malaria control. In 1975, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society of London and also served on the WHO panel of Vector Biology and Control and U.S. Academy of Sciences, National Research Council, Expert Panels. He is a member of the advisory panels on malaria and yellow fever in the ministry of Health of Uganda. In 2006, the Rotary Club of Entebbe gave a Vocation Award to Dr Mukwaya for distinguished service to society. He joined the category of Biological Sciences of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences in 2009.

unasPROF. MARY J.N. OKWAKOL

Prof Mary Okwakol is the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Busitema University. She holds a BSc in Botany/Zoology, MSc and PhD in Zoology from Makerere University, with further training at the University of Aberdeen, UK. She is a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society of London. Prior to becoming substantive Vice Chancellor, Busitema University, she served as Deputy Vice Chancellor of Gulu University where she spearheaded the development of a unique Bachelor of Agriculture Programme and participated in the development of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme.

She is a lady with several "firsts" in her life. She is the first woman Vice Chancellor of a Public University in Uganda, the first woman Professor of Zoology at Makerere University, and indeed many other "firsts" in her career as a scientist- she was the first woman member of Trustees of the Uganda National Parks (UNP) in 40 years, during which time she led to merging process of UNP and Game department into the present Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). As a researcher, she was among the initiators and developers a GEF/UNEP project on Conservation of Below Ground Biodiversity for sustainable land production in seven tropical countries: Brazil, Cote d'Ivore, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Mexico and Uganda. her contributions towards development have been recognized with several awards from various institutions. Prof Okwakol is among the few women scientists in Uganda who have contributed immensely to the advancement of the sciences and she stands out as an icon of science who in many respects deserves recognition. She joined the category of Biological Sciences of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences in 2009.

unasPROF. HANNINGTON ORYEM-ORIGA

Born in 1949, Prof. Oryem Origa is one of the few specialists of Ethno botany. He obtained BSc, MSc and PhD degrees from Makerere University. He has served since 1974 in the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Makerere University in different capacities, including being Head of Department of Botany and also as Dean, Faculty of Science. Prof Oryem Origa has worked in various capacities with international agencies including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO),

International Development Co-operation (IDC) and the World Bank, among others. In Research arena, Prof. Oryem Origa has undertaken several studies to understand plant physiological stress under nutrient, water, pollutant and general climatic change and explored options of conservation. He is an active member to many professional bodies including Uganda Biometric Society, International Biometric Society, Uganda Wildlife Society and East African Wildlife Society. He joined the category of Biological Sciences of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences in 2009.
